The Costs of Orthodontics: Are There Affordable Options for Families in Adelaide?
In Adelaide, a full course of braces typically costs about $6,000–$9,000, and comprehensive Invisalign about $6,000–$9,500. At Cumberland Dental in Cumberland Park, braces start from $7,500 — around $58 a week on an interest-free Denticare plan — and Invisalign from $8,000 all-inclusive, around $62 a week. We publish these prices upfront, which almost no Adelaide specialist orthodontic practice does, so you know the cost before you book.
In a June 2026 page-by-page review of 27 Adelaide specialist orthodontic practices, just one published a comprehensive treatment price on its own website; almost nine in ten published no treatment price and quote only after a consultation. We think you deserve a straight answer before you sit in the chair.
| What the practice published on its own website | Practices | Share of 27 |
|---|---|---|
| Published a comprehensive treatment price | 1 | 3.7% |
| Published only a single weekly payment figure (no total) | 1 | 3.7% |
| Published only a fee range (no single price) | 1 | 3.7% |
| Published no treatment price (quoted only after a consultation) | 24 | 88.9% |
| Total specialist orthodontic practices reviewed | 27 | 100% |
Method: a page-by-page review of every Adelaide specialist orthodontic practice’s own website in June 2026, recording whether a comprehensive treatment price was published. Figures describe specialist orthodontic practices only; general dentists who provide braces are counted separately. Full method available on request. The same page-by-page review across five Australian cities is in our orthodontic pricing transparency survey.
Below we explain what drives the cost of orthodontic treatment, what you can expect to pay in Adelaide, how health-fund cover works, and exactly what is included in our pricing.
What Influences the Cost of Orthodontics?
The cost of orthodontic treatment varies with several factors.
1. Type of treatment
Orthodontics isn’t one-size-fits-all. Typical Adelaide price ranges are:
- Traditional metal braces — about $6,000–$9,000 for a full course. Durable and effective for everything from simple to complex alignment issues.
- Ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces — usually 10–20% more than metal, up to around $11,000, because the materials are less visible.
- Clear aligners (Invisalign) — about $6,000–$9,500 for a comprehensive course; removable and discreet, ideal for mild to moderate cases.
- Lingual braces — fitted behind the teeth and generally the most expensive option because of their complexity.
2. Complexity and duration of treatment
More severe alignment or bite issues take longer to correct, which increases the cost. A short cosmetic case costs far less than full comprehensive treatment.
3. Who provides the treatment
Treatment provided by a specialist orthodontist generally costs more than the same treatment provided by a general dentist with a special interest in orthodontics. Dr Jack Gaffey is a general dentist who has placed braces since 2011, which is how Cumberland Dental is able to offer quality braces and Invisalign at general-dentist fees rather than specialist fees.
4. Health-fund cover
Private health insurance with orthodontic extras can reduce your out-of-pocket cost, but cover is capped. Across the major Australian funds the typical lifetime orthodontic limit is around $1,800 — only about a quarter of a $7,500 course — and most funds apply a waiting period, usually 12 months, before you can claim. See the health-fund section below for how cover differs by provider.

What’s included — and what some practices bill on top
Our quoted price includes your records and x-rays, every scheduled adjustment appointment, unlimited repairs to broken brackets (we never charge for them), retainers, refinements and emergency visits during treatment. Some providers quote a lower headline figure and then add these items separately, so always ask what a quote actually covers before you compare.
Does Private Health Insurance Cover Braces in Adelaide?
It can help, but it rarely covers most of the cost. Orthodontic extras typically carry a first-year limit of around $400 and a lifetime limit of around $1,800, so on a $7,500 course you would still fund the large majority yourself. A waiting period — usually 12 months — applies before you can claim, and lifetime limits carry across if you switch funds.
Will my fund pay the same if a general dentist provides my braces?
For most funds, yes. In our June 2026 review of 13 major Australian funds, 11 paid the same orthodontic benefit whether a registered general dentist or a specialist orthodontist provided the treatment. Two funds are the exception: HCF applies a lower lifetime orthodontic limit for general-dentist treatment, and Health Partners pays a reduced percentage. If you are with HCF or Health Partners it is worth checking your policy, and our team is happy to help you understand your rebate before you commit.
Why Orthodontic Treatment Is Worth It
Orthodontics is about more than appearance. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, which lowers the risk of decay and gum disease, and a corrected bite can ease jaw strain. For children, an early assessment (usually around ages 7–10) lets us identify issues early and, in some cases, reduce the need for more complex treatment later — though comprehensive braces themselves are the same price whatever the age.

Are children’s braces cheaper than adults’?
No. Comprehensive braces are the same price, from $7,500, whether the patient is a child or an adult. We do not run a separate, lower children’s tier. See our full guide to how much braces cost for kids.
Does private health insurance cover braces, and will my fund pay the same if a general dentist provides them?

The typical lifetime orthodontic limit across major funds is around $1,800, about a quarter of a $7,500 course, with a waiting period of usually 12 months. Most funds pay the same rebate whether a general dentist or a specialist provides treatment; HCF and Health Partners are exceptions that pay general-dentist orthodontics at a lower rate, so check your policy.
Is the initial consultation free?
Yes. Your first consultation is free, and you are welcome to bring an existing quote so we can explain your options and what is included.
