So, you’ve made it through months—or maybe even years—of orthodontic treatment. The braces are off, your teeth are beautifully aligned, and you finally have the smile you’ve always wanted. That’s the end of the journey, right?
Not quite.
What many patients don’t realise is that the final phase of orthodontic treatment is just as important as the braces themselves—and it comes in the form of a small but mighty tool: the retainer.
“Braces move your teeth, but retainers keep them there. And trust us, you’ll want to keep that smile exactly where it is.”
What Is a Retainer, and Why Is It Needed?
A retainer is a custom-made appliance—either removable or fixed—that helps maintain your newly aligned teeth in their corrected position. Once your braces come off, your teeth are still at risk of moving back to their original positions. This is known as orthodontic relapse.
That’s where retainers come in. They hold the teeth in place while your gums, jawbone, and surrounding tissues adjust to their new alignment.
📌 Fact: Studies in Australia and worldwide show that the most common reason for relapse after orthodontic treatment is inconsistent or discontinued retainer wear.
How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?
This is one of the most common questions we get at Cumberland Dental—and the honest answer is: for as long as you want your teeth to stay straight.
In general:
- First 3 months post-braces: Retainers are usually worn full-time (except during eating or brushing).
- 3-6 months post-braces: Most patients transition to night-time wear only.
- After 6 months: Night-time wear continues indefinitely to prevent long-term shifting.
Many adults we treat are wearing their retainers a few nights a week—even 10 or 20 years after treatment—and their teeth look fantastic!
What Happens If You Don’t Wear Your Retainer?
If you skip your retainer—or stop wearing it altogether—you might notice subtle changes within just a few weeks. Over time, your teeth may start to:
- Shift out of alignment
- Develop small gaps
- Rotate or crowd again
- Affect your bite and jaw function
In some cases, the results of your entire treatment can be undone, and patients may need to restart orthodontic care. We’ve seen it happen—and we want to help you avoid that frustration (and added cost!).
How to Care for Your Retainer
Whether you’ve been fitted with a removable retainer (like a clear plastic tray or Hawley retainer) or a fixed retainer (a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth), care is key.
For removable retainers:
- Clean daily with a soft toothbrush and cool water.
- Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic.
- Use a retainer cleaning tablet once a week if needed.
- Always store it in its case when not in use—never wrap it in a napkin or leave it on a plate!
For fixed retainers:
- Use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean around the wire. Flossing will break the wire in time.
- Be gentle when brushing to avoid dislodging it.
- Visit us regularly for checks to make sure it’s still secure.
Lost or Broken Retainer? Act Fast
It happens! But don’t wait—your teeth can start shifting within days or weeks. Call us right away and we’ll arrange a replacement or repair. The sooner we act, the easier it is to keep your smile on track.
💡 Tip: Always keep your last retainer as a backup. If your current one is lost or broken, the old one can temporarily prevent shifting while we prepare a new one.
Parents: Help Your Teen Make Retainers a Habit
If your teen has just finished braces, it’s essential they understand how important the retainer is—not just now, but for life. Many young patients feel “done” with treatment after their braces come off, so gentle reminders and a consistent routine at night can make a huge difference.
We often recommend setting a retainer reminder alarm on their phone, or placing the case somewhere visible near their toothbrush.
